What I am about to talk about is the scripted death in map20 in epic 2. By this point the levels go completely alien in theme, and no longer have an egyptian theme. It stays that way for a while while you battle aliens/demons in techbases from map12-20. By map20 you end up in a very fucked up level called anomaly zone and your sudden death at the end of the level has always puzzled me.
The next level has you wake up in an egyptian setting again, but something has changed. You have no recollection on how you got to this level (map21 - shore dream), and it appears you are dreaming the events in this level. But the real truth may be a lot more fucked up.
The fan theory has some evidence to back it up this time and that evidence is mostly found in the level titles of level 30 ("amenthes" and level 27"ammut". I looked up the meaning of the level title of level 30 first and it gave me a hint.
Amenthes is the egyptian afterlife that resembles the real world, that people had to go through to prove their worth to be able to be judged as being pure enough to be one with the sun god Ra. In the ritual, Anubis would judge the dead by weighing their souls vs the feather of truth and justice. If heavier than the feather, they would be eaten alive by the demon Ammit who also is called Ammut. If Lighter they would be able to go to the egyptian version of paradise.
What if your character dies in level 20 and level 21-30 respresent the challenges a soul had to face in amenthes? You would have to fight various demons in amenthes if you died. In level 27 you end up facing the demon ammut, which turns out to be a massive demon shaped room filled with revenants. It is apparent that after this part you weren't weighed well and could not enter paradise, so you end up having a massive boss fight with Set at the end of the game.
There is lots of evidence that you're dead past map21.

a) the enterance to the 21'st level has no gate to show you entered it normally.
b) there is a new kind of gate for level exits in level 21-30
c) you can see your body in map29 and 30

That means in map21-30 you are dead and you are in the egyptian afterlife amenthes!
It's a weird fan theory but it has some evidence to back it up this time. The combination of levels named after parts of the afterlife in egyptian mythology, plus the weird start to map21, plus the new gates plus your dead body being seen in map29 and 30 is enough proof to me.
